The Chantiers de l’Atlantique, based in St- Nazaire at the mouth of the Loire River on the French Atlantic coast, has also been working on its Solid Sail project for several years now – an original ‘wind propulsion device’ that is primarily being developed to significantly reduce the consumption of conventional fuels on large liners and merchant ships. Work is now well enough advanced to anticipate the first Solid Sails being installed on a large commercial ship in early 2025.
