Joan Vila has won the America’s Cup three times. He has also taken part in two further Cup Matches. Two of his victories were with Alinghi, now Alinghi Red Bull Racing, to whom he has returned for the 37th edition in Barcelona. Both Vila and his old friend Carlos Pich are natives of Barcelona where they recently caught up

Joan Vila’s leading role in the America’s Cup goes far beyond his return to the Alinghi Red Bull Team. Yet despite having competed in the last nine editions, and now immersed in the 10th, Vila is still not included in the America’s Cup Hall of Fame. Nor of course is his Spanish friend Luis Sáenz de Mariscal who has been central to the running of both the Cup and many of the best teams for over 25 years.
