As the first Lombard-designed SeaCart 9m trimaran nears completion Torbjorn Linderson and Kåre Ljung explain the engineering of the demountable beam system

Designing the SeaCart beams

The SeaCart 30 is a 9m one-design trimaran racer weighing in at 750kg of race weight with 80m2 of working sails. Our objective was to create a fast one-design class for coastal and offshore racing. Earlier Seahorse articles have covered the boat, the SeaCart race series and the design of the mast.

As a one-design racer the SeaCart will often be demounted, trailered to a new venue and reassembled. The desire to make the boat quickly demountable was weighed against the implications in terms of weight, cost, development time, and hull shape and steering systems. This was the challenge for Kåre Ljung of Windexair - a sister company to Marstrøm Composite AB - who are responsible for the boat's final structural design and also the foils.
