Behind the revolutionAustralian foil pioneer Dr Ian Ward reviews the booming success of the genre and applauds Perth boatbuilder John Ilett's contribution to dinghy sailing's new state of the art I spent a part of last month at Black Rock in Melbourne watching the final heats of the Moth Worlds (actually, I couldn't help myself, I just had to be there). I must say that I have never seen such a huge single step forward in Moth design. Certainly the jump with the addition of wings in 1970 was big, and narrow skiffs in the 1990s have proved to be a very big improvement over Scow Moths, but nothing prepares you for the incredible performance of the foiled Moths.
