Through their various iterations, Maxi classes have always been devised to represent a recognised upper limit in performance and some practicality in design. They have also been helpful for offshore race organisers, in setting an upper limit for entries vying for coveted elapsed-time trophies.

Yet with the inactivity of the ILC Maxi class over the past few years and an alphabet soup of rating rules with no global consensus, organisers have recently had to define their own limits, with little consistency from one event to the next. The door has therefore been left wide open for development of a new level-rating Maxi class as a means of producing fair racing without wrangles over ratings or scoring..........
