DESIGN - BIG FUN

As foilers steadily increase their grip upon the International 14 and International Moth classes, one of the movement's chief protaganists, engineer Mark Pivac, is nearing launch of his 12 metre foiler Spitfire

Following the success of Brett Burvill's hydrofoil Moth Windrush, our radical new 12m (40foot) hydrofoil catamaran is almost ready for launch. As a test bed for new ideas, Spitfire is undoubtedly an extremely interesting yacht [sic].

There are some things about Spitfire that are quite common and well proven. She has glass, carbon, balsa, epoxy and vinylester, two hulls and a rudder. She has other features entirely new. A new soft wing rig, advanced hydrofoils and Fluoropolyurethane bottom paint. Together the old and new is blended into a stunning mixture of technology, aesthetics and craftsmanship. Spitfire is a truly radical weapon. Everyone who visits her sees speed. They see a sleek machine bursting with pent up energy. She has a desire to sail and display her potential. She will be sailing as this article goes to press.
