Uncompromised (Speed)The year was 1992, and the RORC was on the hunt for a replacement for the venerable IOR One Tonner after the following year's Champagne Mumm Admiral's Cup. A handful of designs were considered, using various criteria for performance, compatibility in IMS and offshore safety, but it was a 36ft design from Bruce Farr that was chosen and subsequently rechristened as the Mumm 36. It could be argued convincingly that it was the success of this design that started the current wave of popularity in offshore one-design classes, and also the accompanying drastic downturn among various handicap fleets. It may be fitting, therefore, that it is on the 10th anniversary of the Mumm 36 that the latest one-design from Farr Design is also a 36-footer, but this is where any similarity ends.
