Feast not famine
Talk of recession seems not to have dented the enthusiastic follow up to the complete success of the latest Vendee Globe. As well as preparing their Open 60s for this years fully crewed EDS Atlantic Challenge, many of the best-organised Vendee skippers are now turning their attention to the offshore multi hull circuit.
Very quietly, and somewhat overshadowed by the activity of The Race and the Vendée Itself, no less than six brand new, big budget grand prix trimarans are now at various stages of completion in boatyards around France....See Seahorse May 2001 for the remainder of this feature
Inevitable
The marketplace always wins - Always. The Sydney 40s abject failure to achieve anything like critical mass is being blamed for the current travails of the Admiral's Cup, hut really it is only one part of the picture.
Another big element was the absence, two years ago, of an obvious favourite for the big boat slot. Leading to the potential market then splitting evenly between IMS 5O's and IC45's - which is what transpired, for a while at least...See Seahorse May 2001 for the remainder of this feature
Bravo
Bravo Yves - you have set new standards, in either stubbornness born of frustration, or simple determination. I am not sure which?
And Bravo Patrice. As you describe very eloquently, if you go for it absolutely, nothing is beyond the reach of anyone. Even
a common person' like yourself ....See Seahorse May 2001 for the remainder of this feature
Cam Lewis - The way home
Team Adventure is sailing up the west coast of Africa on our final push to the finish in Marseille, and I now have time to reflect ~ back a little on the incredible sailing our crew has experienced since we launched in mid-November in Cherbourg.
I must congratulate the two teams that beat us. Grant Dalton, Franck Proffit and the Club Med guys who won did a great job. They had their boat in the water, fully funded seven months before the start, and had lots of time to refine their gear and crew. Then they went out and sailed extremely well and got the job
done...See Seahorse May 2001 for the remainder of this feature
Blame - what blame? USA pulls out of Admiral's Cup...
The United States will not field a team in this year's Admiral's Cup regatta. There has been only one other year since the event's inception in 1957 the US has not entered a team, in the waning days of OR in 1993. Reasons cited: "the lack of interest among US owners in supporting the entries in the IC 45 and Sydney 40 classes," according to the selection chairman Ken
Morrison...See Seahorse May 2001 for the remainder of this feature
Ciao Francesco
Italian charm and style won many hearts in New Zealand during the 2000 America's Cup, to the extent that skipper Francesco de
Angelis became something of a local heart-throb. A survey of New Zealand women found him the 2nd sexiest man alive, behind
Latin crooner Ricky Martin. Sex appeal aside, the New Zealand Government this year invested de Angelis as an Honorary Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to yachting and Italian - New Zealand relations. He is the first Italian to receive this
honour...See Seahorse May 2001 for the remainder of this feature
