Prior to the ’92 America’s Cup advanced technology’s influence upon the design of Cup yachts had been dominated by successes in hydrodynamics and the development of sophisticated Velocity Prediction Programs (VPPs). There were a large number of aerodynamicists involved in many of these efforts, but their focus tended to be in the areas of free surface computations (computation of the wave drag caused by the hull), appendage design and reduced windage.
